About Mount
Ruapehu
Mount Ruapehu is the
biggest volcano in Tongariro National Park and offers New
Zealand's biggest ski areas as well as great alpine and transalpine
activities for people from all walks of life. If you would
like to take a leisurely walk in beautiful surroundings, or
climb a frozen waterfall Mount Ruapehu is the year round leisure
paradise for you.
It is however a spiritual
place somewhere that should never be taken lightly or for
granted. Its a place where solace can be sort and respect
given.
The visionary Maori
chief Te Heu Heu Tukino IV gifted Tongariro national park
to all of the people of New Zealand. So remember this gift
deserves our respect. The Maori of the local Iwi and their
customs and traditions should be valued by us all.
Mount Ruapehu has three
Ski areas Whakapapa and Turoa
operated by RAL and Tukino
the club field and home to the often more serious alpine
types.
Tramping (aka Hiking)
in summer is superb across the whole park with some of New
Zealand's best views and dramatic scenery. Just be aware the
weather can change very fast and the mountain god will have
no mercy.
If you enjoy and respect
Mount Ruapehu you will come to love it as a place for recharging
you batteries but remember it has a will of its own. After
all it is an active volcano and it will decide who is who.
