Dubbed the new Spot X by a visiting La Grave guide, Mt.Potts is New Zealand's only helicopter accessed SnowCat skiing experience. Join a group of only fourteen guests skiing or riding the steeps, powder and chutes of Mt.Potts.
CatSkiing starts at 8.30am, when you fly up to the ski area by helicopter. After an avalanche transceiver tutorial the group get into the SnowCat for the first lift to the top. Mt.Potts guide maximise safety and enjoyment, they'll do their best to take you where you want to go. To access some of the higher chutes the guides may choose to hike a little, but at a pace that suits everyone. Alternative routes are available for non-hikers. At around 12.30pm we break for a delicious picnic lunch, then carry on skiing and boarding until 3.30pm, when we do the final 2km run back to the helicopter to fly down. Schnapps and snacks are served on the balcony of Mt.Potts lodge when we fly back to base, the first shot is on us.
We do an average of 10-12 runs per day, on mostly untracked powder snow. That's nearly 17,000 vertical feet of bliss! Mt.Potts is 2149m high and our base for the day at 1450m.
You'll need to be intermediate or above in ability and ski or board fit to make the most of a SnowCat day at Mt.Potts. Mt.Potts Lodge is located an hour's drive from Methven in Canterbury, New Zealand.
